The surprising thing Google learned about its employees — and what it means for today’s students

by Valerie Strauss @WP

Project Oxygen

  1. being a good coach
  2. communicating and listening well
  3. possessing insights into others (including others different values and points of view)
  4. having empathy toward and being supportive of one’s colleagues
  5. being a good critical thinker and problem solver
  6. being able to make connections across complex ideas.
  7. STEM expertise

Those traits sound more like what one gains as an English or theater major than as a programmer. Could it be that top Google employees were succeeding despite their technical training, not because of it?

Project Aristotle

  1. emotional safety (most important)
  2. equality
  3. generosity
  4. curiosity toward the ideas of your teammates
  5. empathy
  6. emotional intelligence

No bullying. To succeed, each and every team member must feel confident speaking up and making mistakes. They must know they are being heard.
